What allows you to paint, write stories, or create your own song? These abilities are examples of human creativity.


Creativity is the ability to take knowledge, experiences, and imagination and transform them into something new. It is not just about art or music — it is about problem-solving, storytelling, innovation, and invention.


Creativity is the expression of intelligence — learning from experiences, understanding information, and solving problems to achieve goals. Intelligence comes from billions of brain cells working together, enabling us to think, reason, and create. Human creativity is the inspiration for generative AI, and like us, generative AI creates.



What Is Generative AI?


Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence (AI) — technology that can learn and solve problems by imitating how the human brain works. Like the brain, generative AI is creative. Simply put, generative AI is AI that creates.


This creative technology generates new content, such as text, images, music, or code; hence the use of “generative” in its name. It accomplishes this by learning from patterns.



How Does Generative AI Learn?


Think of it like a child learning to draw. At first, they might just scribble, but as they see more drawings and practice more, they start to create recognizable shapes. Over time, they develop the skill to produce beautiful pictures — just like an artist learning from thousands of paintings before creating their own masterpieces. This is how generative AI learns. And just like an artist or a child, generative AI continues to learn and improve over time.


This learning is brought to life by computer models that are exposed to large amounts of information. This could be text, images, paintings, or even code. This is called training the model or the training phase.


Once trained, the AI can create original versions of the information it learned from. Trained with songs, it can write its own melody. Trained with poetry, it can write its own poems. A trained model is ready to create.



How Does Generative AI Create?


After training, the AI uses the patterns and relationships it has learned to produce entirely new material. The creation process starts when a person provides a prompt: a request or instruction given to the AI.


For example:


  • A writer might ask AI to start a story with a specific sentence.

  • An artist could request an AI-generated image of a futuristic sunset.

  • A musician might use AI to compose a melody in a chosen genre or mood.


The AI processes the prompt and then uses its learned knowledge to generate its interpretation of what was requested. This is called the generating phase.


The results are both unique and influenced by the information the AI was trained on. Therefore, generative AI doesn’t simply “copy and paste” — it creates something new based on what it has “seen” during training. The ability to create new content has led to the use of generative AI in many aspects of our personal and professional lives.
